Why Do UK Homes Not Have Air Conditioning? And Why That Is Changing

The UK is in the grip of another heatwave, the third already this year. Temperatures across parts of England are pushing into the mid 30s, amber heat health alerts are in place, and once again many of us are lying awake in bedrooms that feel like greenhouses. Every time the temperature climbs, the same question comes up: why do so few homes and businesses in this country have air conditioning?

Just How Rare Is Air Conditioning in the UK?

Rarer than you might think. Only around 5% of British households have air conditioning, and in England the figure is roughly 4.3%, which works out at just over a million homes. There is a regional divide too. London and the East of England lead the way at around 6.5%, while in the North East the figure drops to just 1.5%.

Compare that with countries like the United States, Japan or Australia, where air conditioning is often fitted as standard, and the UK starts to look like an outlier. While many businesses do have AC installed, plenty still do not. Across Britain, some shops, restaurants and offices continue to rely on fans, open doors and crossed fingers when temperatures soar.

Why We Never Bothered

There are a few good reasons why the UK went without for so long.

• Our climate never used to demand it. For most of living memory, a British summer meant a handful of genuinely hot days. An open window and a fan would see you through, so a permanent cooling system felt hard to justify.
• Our buildings are designed to trap heat. Solid brick walls, small windows and insulation aimed squarely at keeping warmth in during winter all make British homes slow to cool down once they heat up. They were never built with hot summers in mind.
• It has always been seen as a luxury. Air conditioning has long carried a reputation in the UK as something extravagant, more suited to hotels and hot countries than an ordinary semi in the North West.
• Worries about running costs. With electricity prices among the highest in Europe, many people assumed air conditioning would be painfully expensive to run. Older systems often were. Modern units are a different story.

Why That Thinking May Be Out of Date

The weather has changed, and the numbers back it up. Summer 2025 was the warmest on record in the UK, and figures from the UK Health Security Agency show there were around 1,500 heat related deaths in England across that summer alone. Heatwaves are no longer a novelty. They are arriving earlier, lasting longer and returning several times a season.

The way we live has changed as well. With so many people now working from home, more of us are sitting through the hottest part of the day in houses that were built to hold on to heat, rather than in an air conditioned office.

Unsurprisingly, demand is soaring. During this summer’s heatwaves, requests for domestic air conditioning installations jumped by over 300% compared with last year, and retailers have struggled to keep portable units and fans on the shelves. What was once seen as a luxury is quickly becoming a sensible investment.

It Is Not Just Homes Feeling the Heat

For businesses, hot weather is more than a comfort problem. Customers do not linger in a stuffy shop or restaurant, staff productivity drops noticeably in the heat, and anywhere handling food has hygiene and safety standards to maintain, whatever the weather.

Refrigeration equipment feels the strain too. Cold rooms, cold counters and display fridges all have to work far harder when the ambient temperature climbs, which is exactly when breakdowns tend to happen. A heatwave is the worst possible time to lose a cold room full of stock, so it pays to have your refrigeration serviced before the hot weather arrives rather than after something fails.

For most homes and businesses, there are two main routes.

Whichever route you take, two things matter most: the system needs to be sized correctly for the space, and it needs to be installed properly by qualified engineers. A poorly sized unit will either struggle to cope or cost more to run than it should.
